My Mama; The Most Glamorous Woman I Know

I've been trying to organize my photos this past month, when I found photo's of my mama. I know everyone says that their mama is gorgeous, but seriously, my mama is gorgeous! Just look at her...

I'm not sure how old she is in these earlier pictures, but I'm guessing she's in her late teens, early 20's. I'll have to ask her when she gets back from her much deserved vacation in her home town of Moroleon, Gto. Mexico.

My mama still loves to wear bright red-orange lipstick. She has the softest hands and the tiniest feet, adorned with her signature gold polish.

See those perfect eyebrows? She never wax's or tweezes them, they're naturally perfect!

Here's my mama with my sister. I'll admit that I'm a bit jealous, everyone says that my sister looks just like my mama...and she does. I, however, look like my daddy. sigh...

So that's my mama, the most glamorous woman I know.

{Dana} Real Vintage Mama Profile part 2/2

Hello again ladies! I hope everyone is having a fabulous week. I had a bit of a rough start myself (twisted my ankle) but I'm trying to take it easy so that I'll be ready to wear my 3" patent leather shoes to this weekends anniversary party. Oh, but my little rascals don't give me a minute to sit and ice it! Anyway...
on with the Dana show!

Although Dana says she finds fashion inspiration everywhere, 50's fashion in particular pulls at her heart strings. She likes to keep her closet filled with classic essentials that she can mix and match, like cardigans and jeans that hug her curves just right.
Dana's favorite shops are Forever 21 (check out their new resort 2010 featuring the romantic side of vintage), Meow Vintage in Long Beach and My Baby Jo in L.A.

I love exercise dvds!  Right now I just started up with my P90X
series, it's intense but I love the challenge.  I feel like the Biggest Loser contestants when they first start, all struggling & sweaty.
Dana currently follows the Atkins diet which she says helps her to eat her veggies and stay away from processed foods. She also makes sure that her body is getting all the nutrients by taking a multi-vitamin, magnesium, probiotics, omega fish oils, and chromium. By the looks of her picture above, her system seems to be working well!

Dana's tips for getting back into shape after kids?
Put the baby in a stroller as soon as you can & go out for walks.  Trust me, it's good to get out of the house.

{Dana} Real Vintage Mama Profile part 1/2

Meet Vintage Mama Dana...

Dana is a So Cal mama of two darling children, a 5 yr old daughter and 2 yr old son. She's been married to her devilishly handsome husband for just over 7 years and is the creative mind behind Lil' Darlin' Accessories, a line of handcrafted accessories for the pin-up in you.

Skin and Hair
Dana likes to stick to the basics when it comes to skin care. She washes her face twice a day and finishes it off with a lotion and eye cream.

Vintage Beauty Tip - the skin around the eyes is very fagile and ages faster then the rest of your skin. Using an eye cream day and night helps to keep your eyes looking smooth and bright.

She's a former Mary Kay consultant, so many of her skincare products are from that line. Here are some of her favorite goodies:
Vintage Mama Dana is a licensed cosmetologist so she saves money by doing all that wonderful salon stuff herself. She swears by Beyond Zone hair products, sold at Sally Beauty Supply, and some good old-fashion pink sponges rollers for curling her hair without the damaging heat.
Dirty hair works so much better to hold all the constructed types of hair styles, rolls, pomps & the like.  I wash my hair every other day or so & find that I can set the already styled hair in sponge rollers for the night & the next morning, comb out & go.  Looks so good!
Dana's everyday look is fresh and simple. She uses a tinted moisturizer, a brow pencil and a touch of blush.

Her must have makeup tools are her fingers, eyelash curler and art brushes which she reveals work just as well as the expensive makeup brushes at a fraction of the cost. (Wow! I didn't know you could use art brushes...)

Dana is one hot, vintage mama who knows how to keep her glam! Just look at her gorgeous pics!

Tomorrows post will feature Dana's style and fitness, including the program she's using to shed those pesky post baby pounds.

Vintage Mama Turned Sex Kitten

I don't know about you fine ladies, but as soon as I became a mama I found myself having a lot less sex, and that just ain't right! I'm going to shamefully admit that I, unknowingly, sabotaged my own sex life. I forgot my inner sex kitten

Though it's easy for me to put the blame on weight gain, it's not completely true. I was overweight when we were first married and things were hot then. When I had lost weight things did get even hotter (thats when we got pregnant with Jack-Jack), but again it wasn't really because of my weight.

What I've come to realize is that no matter what weight I'm at, my Hunny will think I'm hot if I think I'm hot. So how did I make that happen?

I became a sex kitten.

Though I do take into consideration what my Hunny thinks is hot, I usually try to focus on things that I think are hot. For example most of my undies are lacy, leopard or otherwise frilly. I love to wear my sweater girl bullet bra's. I usually wear my hair in a tousled, bed head way. I always have my toes painted red. I make sure that my legs are super smooth so that my ankle tattoo  looks wicked hot.

There's a million little things that I do now that makes me feel like a total sex kitten. And with 3 rascally boys, this vintage mama needs all the motivation she can get!

What do you do that makes you feel like a sex kitten?

Free Download: Keep Track Of Your Weight Loss

So as you can gather from my posts this year, I'm totally set to lose this post baby fat and get myself a rockin' pin-up body. I've kept track of my measurements for the past 3 years so I can see exactly what my measurements were before baby number 2 and 3. Seeing how fit (and fat!) I was before helps me to stay motivated. My little journal is pretty much filled up so I decided I should create a log so I can just print them out as I go. Creating one also gives me the flexibility to keep track of exactly what I want as well as making it super cute with pin-up pictures all over to make me happy.

You can download the pdf file here. Save it. Use it. Share it.

Here are some tips on how to use it:

  • Record your measurements once a month, preferably 1 week after your monthly cycle
  • Refer to this guide for tape measure placement
  • There are 2 large spaces for you to put pictures of yourself. I suggest putting one from the front view and one from a side view.
  • Use this online calculator to determine your body fat %. It will give you 2 numbers, one using the US Navy calculator and the other using the YMCA calculator. You can choose either number to record, just remember which one you are choosing so that you can accurately monitor your weight loss.
I want to create more files like this to help vintage mama's keep track of fitness, personal care or style so if you have any suggestions please share them in the comments below!

Retro Glam At The Golden Globes

I'm not one to follow celebrity fashion like a hawk, but when Hollywood gets all dolled up for an awards show, I'm like a moth to the flame. Here are some of my favorite retro glam pics from omg! from last night's show.

Cameron Diaz gives a nod to 1930's glam in this Alexander McQueen dress. You can get the same look in this vintage gown from etsy seller JasperVisions.

Lea Michele, wearing Oscar de la Renta, looks ready for her cotillion. Get the same look with this Bubble Gum pink dress from etsy seller TimelessVixenVintage.

I'm not sure if this dress by Zac Posen is appropriate for the Golden Globes, but Tina Fey still looks rockin' in it. Just put on some red peep-toe's, red lipstick and a flower in her hair and she's pin-up ready! Get the same look with this dress from etsy seller TimelessVintageVixen.

Lauren Graham's dress was very pretty, but didn't really suite her body. Even in this ill-fitting dress, she still reminded me of someone...

Here of some vintage glam hair styles..

Having Tea With Vintage Mama Dana

This week I had the delight of meeting Dana for tea at the Tranquil Tea Lounge in Fullerton. Dana and I first met in one of the many forums in CafeMom. As it turns out we have more in common than just being lovers of vintage!
We both went to junior high in Pico Rivera, we both went to cosmetology school (she's a licensed hair dresser) and we both have a quirky sense of humor.
I told my Hunny I would be gone for about an hour, but before I knew it Dana and I had spent 2 hours together. Time sure does fly when your laughing it up.
Dana is so glamorous even in her "whatever clothes", as she called them. Hair and makeup perfectly in place with a bright, green daisy pinned by her ear.

Dana will be the next Real Vintage Mama to be profiled. I will be posting that the beginning of next week.
In the meantime you can check out her adorable handmade accessories or become a fan on facebook.

{Kestrel StJames} Real Vintage Mama Profile part 3/3

I hope you ladies enjoyed the first 2 posts about Kestrels beauty and fashion. She's an amazing vintage mama isn't she? Well we're not done yet. In this post we'll learn how she keeps her amazing body "pin-up" ready after 3 babies.

Kestrel calculated her dress size to be 12-14 according to this calculator, though she looks like an 8 to me. This breastfeeding mama admits that her diet really isn't the best and says she really wouldn't reccomend it to anyone (I don't think it's that bad. I've eaten worse...way worse).
I eat the same thing pretty much every day.  Quakes mini rice cakes in ranch flavor, Boston Organics roasted red pepper and tomato soup, and Uramaki sushi rolls from the kiosk at the grocery store.
She also suggests not eating what you feed your kids since their foods are more calorie dense. Growing kids need more calories after all!  (Hmm, never though of that. Great tip!)

Trying to fit exercise in when your a mama can be an incredible challenge. Kestrel manages her exercise by doing it all day! I love this, it's genius.

I put my exercises into my life.  When I’m on the computer, I’m using the thigh master.  When I get up in the morning I lift the baby over my head twenty times.  Every time I sit down in the computer chair I lift a basketball up over my head twenty times with my ankles.  When I watch tv I lay on the floor with a soccer ball under the small of my back and do crunches and pelvic tilts.  I do what some have called ‘wacky-jacks’ because I get really bored with onsie twosies.  I also do twenty lunges a day on each side holding the 20lb baby.
Now I have no excuse! Starting tomorrow I'm going to start my day doing lunges with my 17lb baby! Here's a video showing those wacky-jacks Kestrel does.

Kestrel really knows how to get that baby weight off. She's already down to 140 lbs, 10lbs less then before baby and only 5 lbs away from her high school weight! Great job mama!

One last motivational tip from Kestrel...

It’s mental.  It really is.  The only thing that stops people from getting serious, getting on a diet, staying on a diet and making a point of exercising is telling themselves that it doesn’t really matter if they do because… what ever reason they are currently using.  Too tired, too old, too this that or the other thing.
Thank you so much Kestrel for letting me and my readers take a peek into your beauty, fashion and fitness. You are one amazing mama and a gorgeous woman.

So Long 28, Hello 29!

Dear 28,
We had a good run 28. Yes, indeed. We had many good times, and few bad ones as well. This year together sure has been a crazy one...

Remember when I found out that I was pregnant only 10 months after Jack-Jack. Gosh that was scary! I wasn't sure if I could handle 3 boys. But you were there, every step of the way. Even when I drove myself to the hospital in labor.

What about the time when I drove with the parking brake on which made my rear brakes give out and I didn't realize it until I was going down a hill. That was pretty scary wasn't it? Ah, good times...good times.

And then there was that time when I told my family about my new blogging adventure. Boy that was one uncomfortable blank stare! But you believed in me.

Yeah, you were there for me the whole year through. But now it's time to part ways. There is someone else in my life. Her name is 29, Lucky 29.

29 is actually alot like you. She pretty, fun to be with, sweet and quite witty (if I do say so myself), but she's also different. She's wiser, more resourceful, and willing to take more risks. Sure she's a little older then what I'm used to (I still miss '25'), but I think Lucky 29 suites me better.

So as much as I hate breakups, I must.

So long 28.

Hello 29!

{Kestrel StJames} Real Vintage Mama Profile part 2/3

My last post focused on Kestrel's skin and hair care. Today we'll be taking a peek at her fashion and makeup must-haves.

Day to day, I don’t usually wear much.  When I’m shooting, I wear TONS.  I look like a two dollar trollop, because in order to not have all your work get washed out by the bright lights photographers use, you have to use a heavier hand.  It never fails that after a shoot I end up having to stop by the school for some reason, and I’m sure they think I must always look like that.  False lashes, Raggedy Anne cheeks and all!
When Kestrel does wear makeup, she relies on her old faithfuls: MAC's FluidlineUrban Decay's Eyeshadows (without glitter), and Smashbox for concealer and powder (she raved about their Halo Perfecting Powder).

Currently Kestrel mostly uses Revlon Lip Colors (in the black tubes), but says she's in the process of upgrading her lipsticks.

You really do get what you pay for when it comes to make up.  I used to say oh yeah, I can get the same looks with drug store product, but once I started upgrading to the good stuff, I found I could get those looks quicker, easier [using less product]

Here are a couple of shots of her perfumes Angel by Thierry Mugler and Woman by Versace .

Here's her dresser, complete with the baby Tylenol, an essential to any vintage mama!

Kestrel admits tat she's a bit of an "oddball" housewife. She's tattooed, with large holes in her earlobes, and loves her some killer high heels (sounds about right to me!). She's the kind of gal that just knows what she likes and wears just that, what she likes. Here are some pieces that she currently likey:
  • cardigans
  • Victoria Secret Skinny Jeans
  • Shoes!

Shoes are my latest indulgence, and I’ve been going shoe crazy in every color! Red satin, black patent leather, purple patent leather, pink patent leather, leopard,  black and white, pink sequined…

Kestrel likes to shop at Pinup Girl ClothingFrancescas Collection, JC Penny and Hannah D’s, a local boutique. Check out her closet! I don't know that that black ruffly thing is but I want to play dress up with it!

Her biggest fashion challenge after kids?

Not self sabotaging.  For YEARS after having my second and when the kids started school I was on this dress down kick.  I think I was hiding from people.  I thought by doing this, I would be ‘taken seriously’ or ‘liked’ but what it really resulted in was making me into a watered down version of myself and breaking down my identity for the sake of fitting in.
Tomorrows post will feature her fitness tips!
